A Family Tale
Until 2014, this open living space was the home of Aunt Anna, the former owner from the Caldaro hotelier family Ambach-Maran. Aunt Anna loved this place and occupied the rooms themselves. Later, the architect Walter Angonese transformed the suite, adding new furnishings and paying stylistic homage to Othmar Barth and his daring lakeside hotel project.
Architecture
The suite is situated in the southernmost corner of the second floor, close to the roof terrace. It is a spacious open-plan living and sleeping area, with linear furnishings in bleached American pine: a theme Barth used for the other rooms. In addition, there are two separately accessible loggias providing a secluded outdoor retreat.
Panorama
Nothing distracts from the views and waterscape outside, which are in constant change throughout the day and throughout the year. The 1970s flair has been retained right down to the last detail. This is visible in the selection of chairs, such as the characteristic spaghetti garden chairs in plastic; a contemporary reinterpretation by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso.
Design
Architect Othmar Barth's design style runs through the suite, from the selection of fabrics, to the lighting and seating. At the Seehotel Ambach, again as before, one can sit on a classic from the Italian Bel Design School: «Selene», a chair by Vico Magistretti cast in the then newly discovered plastics. Barth selected the stable, stackable and understated Selene for the rooms here. The chair was produced in series from 1969, by the Milanese company Artemide, and is exhibited today at MoMa in New York.
The Old and the New
Elegant and light, practical and bold with small, lovingly placed accents which are in memory of Barth's signature style. For the bathroom, architect Walter Angonese has used ceramic extensively and included contemporary upholstered furniture by Moroso. Elements that are seemingly opposites are harmonised, as seen in the tubular aluminium structure of the rounded sofa: a Barth element recognizable throughout the hotel. Highly contrastive, the bright red of the metal responds to the muted colours of the textiles.
